Dr. Mark's Nicaragua experience:

This past August I had the opportunity to serve my Air Force Reserve two week annual tour in Nicaragua. If I could use one word to describe the trip, it would be "perspective." Never having been on a humanitarian mission before, this was a real eye opener to see what dentistry looks like in other countries. Physicians, pediatricians, optometrists, dentists, public health and support staff treated the underserved local populations in three different small towns over the course of 10 days. Together, we saw over 9,000 patients of all ages providing medicine, glasses, and you guessed it... extractions! Without power, or suction, or restorative materials, or handpieces, the dental staffs were limited to pulling teeth. You can just imagine dentistry without the "luxuries" that we here in American dental offices enjoy (air conditioning, televisions playing while you lay back in a "dental" chair, no fear of malaria, etc). The Nicaraguan people were extremely grateful which made it all worth it, and this was a trip I'll never forget.
